A Foggy Morning Elopement at Cloudland Canyon State Park
We showed up to Cloudland Canyon that morning expecting mountain views.
Instead, we got fog.
A LOT of fog.
The kind where you stand at an overlook knowing there's an entire canyon right in front of you...and you can see approximately none of it. 😂
And honestly?
We wouldn't have changed a thing.
The fog rolled through the trees and completely changed the feeling of the morning. Everything was quiet and still, and for a while it felt like these two had the whole place to themselves.
No giant ceremony. No packed timeline. Just two people getting married in the mountains on a very foggy North Georgia morning.
Yeah. We're pretty big fans of days like this.
When North Georgia Weather Does Its Own Thing
If you're planning to get married outside in North Georgia, here's something you should probably know:
The weather does not care about your plans.

You can check the forecast approximately 700 times—and trust us, we have—and sometimes Mother Nature is still going to show up with her own ideas.
This morning was a perfect example.
Cloudland Canyon is known for its huge canyon views, but the fog had completely taken over. Instead of trying to fight it or waiting around for the landscape to look the way we'd imagined, we leaned into what we actually had.
And what we had was pretty freaking beautiful.
The fog softened everything around us. The trees disappeared into the distance. The overlook felt completely different from the Cloudland Canyon we'd photographed before.
It was moody and quiet and a little weird in the best possible way.
And it made this morning theirs.
You Don't Need a View to Have a Really Good Wedding Day
This is something we wish more couples knew when planning an outdoor wedding or elopement:
The landscape doesn't have to perform for you.
You don't need a perfect sunset.
You don't need the mountains to be completely clear.
You don't need peak fall color.
And you definitely don't need the weather app to show a little yellow sun for your wedding to be beautiful.
Of course we're going to hope for all the pretty things right along with you. But some of our favorite photographs have happened when things didn't look anything like what we'd expected.
Rain.
Fog.
Wind.
Clouds.
Sometimes those are the things that end up giving a day its personality.
So if you wake up on your elopement morning and the mountains have completely disappeared?

Why Cloudland Canyon Works So Well for Elopements
There's a reason we keep coming back to Cloudland Canyon State Park.
You've got huge overlooks, wooded trails, waterfalls, rocky areas, and completely different scenery depending on where you are in the park.
Which means your elopement doesn't have to be:
arrive → ceremony → take 10 photos → leave.
You can actually make a day out of it.
Say your vows at an overlook. Wander through the woods. Pack a picnic. Hike down toward the waterfalls. Bring a few of your favorite people—or don't.
That's what we love about elopements in the first place.
There isn't a script you have to follow.
So... Should You Elope in the Morning?
We are BIG fans of mornings at popular outdoor locations.
And yes, we know.
Getting dressed for your wedding while most normal people are still sleeping isn't everyone's idea of fun. 😂
But hear us out.
An early morning at Cloudland Canyon can mean fewer people around, quieter trails, and a little more space to actually experience the place without feeling like you're getting married in front of a line of hikers waiting for the overlook.
And there's something about starting your wedding day this way that we really love.
Everything is quiet.
The rest of the day is still ahead of you.
And after you're married?
You have an entire day to celebrate however the heck you want.
Go hike.
Get breakfast.
Meet your family.
Pop champagne.
Take a nap.
Seriously. It's your wedding day.
Small Doesn't Have to Mean Less
This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions about elopements.
Choosing something small doesn't mean you're choosing a watered-down version of a “real” wedding.
But it also doesn't mean eloping is somehow better or more meaningful than having 150 people on a dance floor.
They're just different ways to get married.
For some couples, having everyone they love in one room is the whole point.
For others, the thought of standing in front of 150 people makes them want to run directly into the woods. 😂
If you're in that second group, an elopement gives you a lot of freedom to decide what you actually want the day to look like.
Maybe it's just the two of you.
Maybe your parents come.
Maybe there are 15 people waiting somewhere afterward.
Maybe you hike to a waterfall in wedding clothes.
There's no prize for doing your wedding a particular way.
Do the version that sounds like you.
Our Favorite Part of This Cloudland Canyon Elopement
Yes, the fog was incredible.
And obviously we took approximately 8 million photographs of it.
But what we loved most was how quiet the morning felt.
There wasn't a huge production happening around these two. There weren't a hundred things competing for their attention.
They had time to walk around, take everything in, laugh together, and just be married in this ridiculously beautiful place.
That's what we want our couples to have—whether there are two people at your wedding or two hundred.
Not a day built around taking photographs.
A day worth remembering that we happen to be there photographing.
